How to choose web hosting for a small business

Storage, bandwidth, backups, security and support: the hosting features that matter for a small business website, and the ones that don't.

Your hosting is where your website lives. When it's good, you never think about it. When it's bad, your site is slow, goes offline at the worst moment, or gets hacked. Here is what to look at when you choose a plan.

How much storage and bandwidth do you need?

Most small business websites are smaller than people expect. A typical WordPress site with a few dozen pages and optimized images fits comfortably in 1 to 2 GB of storage. You need more if you host lots of high-resolution images, downloads or an online store with many products.

Bandwidth (sometimes called transfer) is the amount of data your site sends to visitors each month. A site with a few thousand visitors a month uses far less than 50 GB. If you run ads or expect traffic spikes, choose a plan with more headroom or unlimited transfer.

Backups are not optional

Mistakes happen: a plugin update breaks a page, someone deletes the wrong file, or a site gets infected. With daily backups, you restore yesterday's version in minutes. Ask your host how many days of backups they keep and whether restoring is included. Our hosting keeps up to 30 daily copies of your site.

Security features to look for

  • Free SSL certificate so your site loads over HTTPS and shows the padlock in the browser.
  • Automatic updates for WordPress core and plugins, since outdated software is the most common way sites get hacked.
  • Account isolation, so a problem on another customer's website can't spread to yours.
  • A firewall or CDN such as Cloudflare, which filters malicious traffic before it reaches your server and speeds up your site for visitors far away.

Speed

Visitors leave slow websites, and Google takes page experience into account. Server quality, caching and a CDN all help. Your images and theme matter too, so ask whether your host or developer will optimize them.

Support you can actually reach

When your site is down, you need a person, not a ticket that's answered in three days. Check the support hours, how you contact them (chat, phone, WhatsApp, email) and how quickly they typically respond.

Be careful with very cheap “unlimited” plans

Unlimited plans often come with fair-use limits in the small print, slow shared servers, or a low introductory price that jumps at renewal. Read the renewal price and the limits before you commit.

Quick checklist

  1. Enough storage and transfer for your site, with room to grow.
  2. Daily backups with easy restores.
  3. Free SSL, automatic updates and malware protection.
  4. CDN or Cloudflare integration.
  5. Support available every day, by a channel you actually use.
  6. A money-back guarantee, so you can test it risk-free. Ours is 15 days.
